Fibrin Activation Illustration by Edmond Alexander

Blood Clot - Fibrin Activation | © Edmond Alexander
Blood loss from a damaged vessel stimulates fibrinogen, a soluble plasma glycoprotein, to convert to insoluble strands of fibrin. The fibrin strands trap platelets and blood cells, forming a mesh that creates a hemostatic plug or clot over the wound site. Excessive generation of fibrin due to activation of the coagulation cascade leads to thrombosis, while ineffective generation predisposes to hemorrhage.
