Macrophages phagocytose (engulf and digest) cellular debris and pathogens either as stationary or mobile cells, and then stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells to respond to invading pathogens. They act in both non-specific defense of innate immunity and also specific defense of cell-mediated immunity.
